It's been a few weeks and for whatever reason, the Windows 7 installer just would not finish starting up on my machine (native, not VM). I instead opted to install on Boot Camp on the Macbook. I don't need to edit video *that* often and Quickbooks runs just fine there.

Despite Apple claiming the drivers and install for Windows 7 to not really be supported yet, I was able to get enough of the drivers to work and the install to complete for the 64-bit version. Everything is working really great.

It's also nice not having dual-boot or two OSes to worry about on my primary workstation. There were several SELinux directory labels that had been screwed up during some of my sync processes and I was able to get everything back to a happy place such that Samba sharing and other services could now be relied on rather than depending on which OS I was in at the time...

I purchased Windows 7 Professional.

Runs pretty good in a VirtualBox (3.0.8) VM on Fedora Linux 11. Ran into two problems:

1) Had an issue with sound not being recognized right out of the box, but I had found a couple different forum threads suggesting a Vista-based AC97 driver. The driver allows sound to come out, but it has a goofy echo to it. I'm going to try and hunt for a more recent version of the driver, hopefully that will clear it up. This will be important as I need Windows first for Quickbooks and then also for video editing. If I can't review/edit the video in a useful fashion, maybe I will just do it on the Macbook... ugh.

2) To avoid #1 altogether, I figured I'd use a partition and dual boot like I was with Vista. The installer doesn't even come all the way up in this scenario. I'm not sure why. The DOS-y looking screen gets done, I get a blue artsy background and a pointer, then it just stops loading and hangs out.

My hardware is all pretty recent, should be more than enough for this guy, I think it's choking on the hw config:

Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 1333Mhz
P35-DS4
8GB 1066Mhz DDR2

/dev/sda 2TB
/dev/sda1 500GB HPFS/NTFS *
/dev/sda2 100MB /boot
/dev/sda3 30GB /
/dev/sda4 Extended
/dev/sda5 64GB swap
/dev/sda6 1.3TB LLVM

/dev/sdb 1TB
/dev/sdb1 30GB /
/dev/sdb2 4GB swap
/dev/sdb3 465GB LVM
/dev/sdb4 500GB LVM

/dev/sdc 1TB
/dev/sdc1 500GB HPFS/NTFS VISTA
/dev/sdc2 100MB Linux
